I follow the American Bird Conservancy on Facebook. They are one of the few organizations that use social media in intelligent and thoughtful ways. Today they posted this image of Sandhill cranes with a quote from Aldo Leopold.

For those of you new to writing about nature, one of your first books to read should be Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac. Many compare his writings to those of Henry David Thoreau, but Leopold goes beyond Thoreau to fully describe a land ethic. So dive in to enjoy Leopold’s writings then embrace his concept of a land ethic as fully as possible in your writings and your life.

“The land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: the land.”- Aldo Leopold
